No, it's not catchy and exciting like Pirates or The Incredibles, not grand and memorable like Rudy or Gone With The Wind, and not strictly emotional like Schindler's List. Instead, it just plain worked. The simple melody repeating throughout the film, on so many different instruments, through so many different arrangements and compositions, really connected the film overall. It was simple enough that it could be repeated and convey so many different emotions and moods, yet powerful enough to connect the vastly different looks of the various parts of the film. I'm glad that it won best animated feature, but I'm thrilled that it won best score.

Originally Posted By mawnck >>I thought it was too foul mouthed and violent for the Academy's tastes.<< Yes, but it was also political. And it was up against the weakest of the Wallace and Gromits (still my pick though), and three silly short comedies. I wasn't nuts about any of them. I had Logorama as #2, but it spent way too much screen time coasting on its gimmick before it started doing anything else interesting. In case you couldn't tell, I am DELIGHTED with Up's Best Score win.

Delighted at the win for the picture as well, and for Logorama too. I was really, really underwhelmed at Loaf and Death (and it pains me to say that - I like W&G so much, they were the topper of our wedding cake, no kidding). Technically it was great as always, but the script just left me flat. I'm kinda glad it didn't win and hoping it serves as a small kick in the pants to Mr. Park not to coast.

I though Loaf and Death was charming as always -- I love that unlike the perfection of computer animated fare, you can see fingerprints in the clay figures, reminding you of what a literally hands-on process claymation is. That said, "French Roast" would have been my pick. Cleverly done, hardly a word said for 8 minutes, but the characters were strong, immediately identifiable types and it had a sweet little moral, too.
