Technology has greatly reduce the noise and the exhaust of diesels. It's only when there is something not functioning properly that the noise and smell comes completely into play. If you want something awful to ride behind try one of the newer cars that need a tune up. That rotten egg smell is so strong sometimes that it can take your breath away.
