I didn't know that they became such a big problem. Over here only Asian tourists use them. I don't use one, because I'm old school and don't like using my phone for pictures. In addition people look stupid with that stick.

So this is a good move.

If nothing else, it just makes the users look dumb. (Rabble, rabble, kids these days!)

If they don't cause a problem, why are they annoying? I don't get the selfie stick hate.

Unless they are causing real problems. Although I'd start by banning them on rides first (although that doesn't seem to work that well with flash picture takers).

It's like people who wear clothes that leave too little to the imagination: realistically it doesn't cause any problems, but it does cause me to silently judge the wearer. Similarly, if you're standing in front of the castle with a selfie stick, I'm going to silently judge you for looking like a fool

A big part of the fun of Disney parks is the people watching (particularly at DLR, where the locals have created somewhat of a "see and be seen" environment), so I always like to see what's going on. And since deep down inside I'm a grumpy old man, I'm going to complain about kids today and their obnoxious self-promoting gadgets

Like strollers, they're one of those things that I can realistically deal with. I'm going to have to take an extra step or two to get around you regardless, so it doesn't matter to me if I take the extra step to the right or to the left. It's when they start causing problems on attractions and during shows that it really impacts other guests' experiences. Since apparently people can't control themselves, I'm perfectly fine with this as the outcome

It's amazing to think that TDR has a policy that you can't hold your camera higher than your head during any sort of show. And even more amazingly, everybody follows the rules and it creates a better experience for everybody. If only we Americans could remember that we're not the only people trying to see something...

You can say that again. It has made a huge difference to the enjoyment of the shows and parades.

They are also pretty strict about kids on shoulders. I totally understand that kids can't see the fireworks shows well otherwise but there is nothing more frustrating than waiting for ages for a show to begin and then a whole load of kids pop up on shoulders in front of you as it is about to begin.

There have been a few selfie stick issues at the parks - mainly on attractions. I think Ops tried to find a way to manage the phenomenon but decided that an outright ban was the easiest. I'm not surprised.

It definitely made a big difference for me, since I'm relatively tall by US standards, but practically a giant in Japan. I was able to stand about 2/3 of the way back in the hub full of people, and have a completely unobstructed view of the castle (all the way down to the floor of the breezeway). It helped that a large chunk of that area had bench seating, but it was great to be able to see so clearly even with a huge crowd in front of me! : )

Is it any worse than someone asking a CM to take a picture of him/her standing in front of the castle (for example)? It's just a way to widen the angle.

In the traditional scenario, it's a whole lot easier to walk between the photographer and the subject when they're getting set up. With the selfie stick, you never quite know when they're going to stick it out right in front of you; it's also more likely to have a lot of back-and-forth while you get ready and review/reshoot the photo. When you have a stranger taking the photo, you're much less likely to do a reshoot

So I guess it's more convenient for the subject(s) the photo, while making it less convenient for everybody else. Which pretty much sums up what the selfie is all about, right?

So it's harder to be rude to someone using a selfie stick?
