The film did have a "we must be concerned about man made climate change" but wasn't too preachy about it. Families will certainly love this film. Take note, however: there are a decent number of very sad scenes. None of them are graphic, and the way it is presented many will go above a child's head, but the film really wants to show the harsh reality of life in the wild.

I Disney did a really fabulous job with this one.

Even though I understand and accept the circle of life, some of the scenes just really got to me. I did find myself questioning whether these scenes were really nessacery in a "Family-Fun Disney" film and thought they might be pushing the edge a little bit. But in the end of it all they did portray these scenes in a much cleaner, family friendly light than I've seen in some other nature documentaries. Here in town we only have an old run down, poorly kept Regal theatre. The screen is small and the less than stellar audio system only has half of it's speakers working when I go in to see a movie. For Earth, I went to a better kept Regal in Temecula, and the screen and sound system made ALL the difference. The cinematography was stunning & the soundtrack was moving. So if you have a terrible theatre I REALLY recommend driving an extra distance (if possible) to see this film in it's actual glory.

Oh my god, the bird mating ritual scene might be the funniest scene in any film. It says more about the male gender than 12 Matthew McConaughey films.

When we got there (around 5:30), the 7:00 show was sold out so we ended up going to a later one than we were planning, at 9:30. It was at the end of two very long days with just a couple hours of sleep the night before, so I definately dozed off a couple times (though I don't think it was ever for more than 10 sec), but I still think it was amazing. Some of the stuff that they showed was just so extreme that I had a tough time comprehending exactly what it was. The enormous flocks of birds is a great example of how you see what it is at first, and then it just keeps going and going to a size that is just so rediculous that I don't even know what's going on. It was really neat how they combined certain things together to make interesting contrasts (dry elephants vs whales) and show great expanses (the one young elephant headed the wrong way). I have to second the comment about seeing it in a good theater. When they started showing the previews and they had that generic green screen that says "The following feature has been rated..." we all noticed how amazingly clear it was. We didn't notice the previews being particularly clear, but once the movie started, I probably had my mouth open in awe for at least half of it. Seeing it in a great theater definately made it work on a much grander scale. The music was also very good. There were a couple different themes that were stuck in my head on the way out of the theater, and they all fit with the visuals very well. I'm definately considering getting the soundtrack (assuming they release it). Before the feature, they also had a little show and tell with a couple different animals, which was really fun. They had a porcupine, arctic fox, an african cat closely related to a cheetah whose name I can't remember, and an aligator. There was one person talking about the animals and taking questions from the audience, and another bringing them on and off the stage and showing them off. It was really well done, and you could tell that they really enjoyed sharing information about the animals with people. The handler was particularly graceful at times when it was clear that the animals didn't really want to cooperate. It's little things like that that really make spending $12 on a movie ticket seem very reasonable, and I really appreciate the extra effort they put into screening their films.
