You figure the 40th celebration will start on 10/01/10.

I also don't know the Disney dates real well. Is 10/01/10 the 40th anniversary of WDW? Please excuse the ignorance.

Their 40th is 10/01/11, they always start a celebration about a year before and all the celebrations start on october 1st because the original opening date.

The Happiest Celebration on Earth (DL's 50th) was an 18 month celebration that started at the beginning of May 2005 (5/5/05), and ended at the end of October 2006. At the beginning of October 2006, they launched YOAMD 1.0, so they actually had two completely different campaigns running at the same time. YOAMD was originally scheduled to run from October 2006 until the end of December 2007. However, after seeing how much of a failure YOAMD 1.0 was, they decided to amp up the ads, get better decorations, and give people more information, creating YOAMD 2.0, which is what we have now. So an accurate title for the current celebration we're having would really be "Two and a Quarter Years of Two and a Quarter Million Dreams" (or TAAQYOTAAQMD for short), but that just isn't very catchy. As for next year's promotion, it's supposed to be announced at the "Miley Cyrus birthday party" they're holding in DL the first weekend of October. The theme is Magical Celebrations, with the slogan "What Will You Celebrate?". As much as I would also like a break from the promotions, the catchy words like "magic," "dreams," "wonder," "fantasy," and "amazement" just make these sorts of things too good to resist...not.

WDP&R has preferred to launch new marketing campaigns in NYC of late - it is easier to get coverage there. Former marketing guru Michael Mendenhall was the driver behind the NYC shift for these events and it appears to be continuing under his successor.
