This is a great aerial view of Disneyland from 1987. In this photo you can clearly see Splash Mountain’s construction site. You can also see the new Big Thunder Ranch area between Big Thunder and the Disneyland Railroad. There is an enormous queue line at Star Tours. The Red and Blue Monorails are both stopped at the stations. You can see keel boats, canoes racing, and the old Motor Boat Cruise in Fantasyland. Enjoy!

P.S. by looking at this photo can you tell what attraction was not running at this time?

    I noticed that too.

The first thing that immediately stands out for me when I see older aerial images of DLR is the parking lot butted up against DL. Even from the air it looks awful.

Everything was so special and I'd just LOVE to go back and re-live the whole thing right now!

I'm going to guess the horsedrawn trolley on Main Street? It looks like there's some sort of vehicle in Town Square, but the tracks appear to be clear all the way up and down the street. But I suppose that's probably not what you were going for...

And here are some interesting things that I noticed, that changed within a few years of this photo being taken.

They were still using the Dumbo with only 10 cars on it, instead of the one with 16 that they have now (they got it in the early 90's, shortly before DLP opened).

There's no Partners statue in the hub. It's just some nice flowers.

Tom Sawyer Island hasn't been reconfigured for the Fantasmic! stage yet. Instead, it looks like there's some sort of temporary stage (which they were known to do from time to time) on the south end that extends over the water, in the area that the island now sits.

The bridge over the Pirates queue and stairs up to the Disney Gallery (which appears to be open, because of the umbrellas in the courtyard) are already in place, even though construction on Splash has just begun.

The Jungle Cruise just feels bigger without Indy there, and you can still see some of the boats between the trees. I think most of it is completely grown over these days.

They're using the old ticket book/turnstyle configuration. I don't think this really changed until the Esplanade was created, but it's still kind of interesting. You can also see just how stretched the Mickey floral is to make it look right from ground level (and it doesn't have those stupid curly-Q's that we still have leftover from YOAMD).

The DL RR isn't running either. Note the missing tracks in Critter Country due to the construction of Splash Mountain.

ORWEN: I imagine he was just PLAYING doctor back then.

    ORGOCH: Got pills?

I'm not sure when they switched it (it was whenever they built that toy store at the 'exit'), but I think it was also in the early 90's.

And at some point through the years, we've lost the trees on the roof of the building just behind the facade that are still in place in this photo. I always thought it looked better with them there, but I guess my opinion doesn't count too much.

Oh. I had assumed that you were the witch who snapped this shot while hovering over the park on your broom.

"The question I have concerns Dr. Hans. Where was HE on the day this picture was taken and what was HE doing?"

I was living in Boston at the time - nowhere near DL. I do recall visiting the park in the summer of '88 and seeing Splash Mountain under construction.
