But then I actually saw the film & really didnt like how they ended up using those designs in animation...

Dreamworks has a habit of using Disney's themes and creating their own movies that they try to get out before Disney. Some may say that Dreamworks isn't stealing, but to the casual observer, it sure looks like it. Lets see... Disney - A Bug's Life Dreamworks - Antz Disney - Emperor's New Groove Dreamworks - The Road to El Dorado Disney - Home on the Range (delayed a lot) Dreamworks - Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron Disney - Treasure Planet Dreamworks - Sinbad Disney - Finding Nemo Dreamworks - Shark Tale Disney - The Wild Dreamworks - Madagascar There have been some large gaps between release dates, mostly because Disney has had story delays and reworked some of the films. However, I still believe that the basic ideas were used over at Dreamworks to cut into Disney's profits. Oh well, I can't really prove this, but to me it looks suspect.

Somebody also correct me if I'm wrong, but I also heard that this was originally in the works at Disney Feature Animation, but they decided to pass eventually and gave the story over to this new studio, while owning distribution rights. Is that correct, or did I hear wrong?

Not sure who originated "The Wild" but the arrangement seems to be similar in many ways to Vanguard, and Disney was hoping this Studio would be the next Pixar. Disney doesn't seem too confident in "The Wild" and at this point maybe they are hoping for business like that "Hookwinked" film has gotten.
