Almost any hotel will let you cancel a reservation by 6 PM on the day you were scheduled to arrive. Since I no longer travel with young children the chance of having to delay a vacation due to illness is minimized. I figure over the long run I am better off assuming the risk myself than buying travel insurance. I can certainly understand those who feel differently though. It depends on your own situation and what type of risk you are willing and able to assume on your own. I never buy warranty plans on appliances and electronics either... I figure if the companies weren't making money on the policies they wouldn't offer them... I know over time I will come out ahead, even if I have an occasional problem. That is especially true with electronic items where the price of a plan frequently is 25% or more of the purchase price.

We try to fly Jetblue whenever we fly. We have always found their customer service to be outstanding. Last year when our flight was delayed because of weather (which they obviously had no control over) they rebooked us onto the earliest flight out PLUS gave us a nice credit on our True Blue account that basically gave us a free flight in the future...all without even asking for anything. Appliance warranties are not worth the money. You are basically gambling that your item will be the one that breaks down within the warranty period. Today most electronics will outlive the warranty if it is treated properly. Companies make a ton of money of extended warranties.

Originally Posted By vbdad55 I have never taken it either for the reasons Danny said- lots of things that would cause me to have to alter plans ( namely work) is not covered. Also if I had to return to work( and this has happened once already)- I would just leave my family there to enjoy- everyone doesn;t have to suffer. now remember I don not have as much at stake financially because my hotel is not cash ( per se) it is points. as for the weather- the only time it really affected us was we got there in themiddle of a tropical depression. The first 3 days of the vacation were crappy- but they were still vacation- we made the best of it.. but I could see where someone would use the insurance..just not for me

Plus, my Dad owns an insurance company so I've been brought up to always get insurance! Glad it paid off for you, CMDad. I claimed for something worth about $100 a few years ago on a WDW trip, can't for the life of me think what it was right now. And when I was 8 and on a family trip to Europe we were robbed on a sleeper train and they took everything except our passports, so it was definitely a good thing we had insurance on that trip.
