I see uniformed service members in Disneyland quite a bit. but mostly Marines from Camp Pendleton. However, the US Marines still require their Marines to wear Dress Blue Charlies, which is sort of the USMC "Business Casual" look. This is what a Marine generally wears to Disneyland with his/her family or friends, the Marine on the far left of this photo... http://chuksblog.files.wordpre...eiii.jpg

But what a Marine NEVER wears in public (aside from commuting to/from base), especially at Disneyland, is their Battle Dress Uniform. That's the stereotypical camo uniform that they wear to work in the field, or in actual battle environments in combat.

However, the US Army, in an odd bit of loosening standards, recently declared that their version of a Battle uniform is now acceptable to be worn in public. There is no longer a version of "Business Casual" that a Soldier would wear to Disneyland or in public, unlike Marines or Sailors or Airmen. The result is that US Army Soldiers are now seen wearing their Battle uniforms in public routinely, and I've seen several at Disneyland in recent years.

Here's the far more casual Battle uniform that Army Soldiers now wear to places like Disneyland if they choose to. http://military.plainfacts.net.../acu.jpg

Previously, an Army Soldier going to Disneyland in uniform would have worn the Army version of USMC Dress Charlies, AKA the Army's "Business Casual" look for casual appearances in public places like Disneyland. http://usarmy.vo.llnwd.net/e2/...form.jpg

I find it a bit disturbing that the US Army now allows their Soldiers to wear the far more casual, and frankly warlike, Battle uniforms in public. I read somewhere that the Army did away entirely with their semi-formal uniform all together, which is why Soldiers are left to wear the Battle uniforms in public now.

The Marine Corpe, US Navy, and US Air Force have not gone to the lowered and more casual standards for public appearances that the Army now does. Which is why Marines show up routinely at Disneyland wearing Dress Charlies.

So.... It would be best for a Soldier to not wear their Battle uniform to Disneyland. It just looks... not right.

And, on top of that, Disneyland does not now nor have they ever given free admission to servicemen and women in uniform. There are discounted Disneyland tickets available at the Morale & Welfare Office at most bases, however.

Acknowledged his presence with a nod and a muttered "Semper Fi."

My dad was a Marine. Served his entire tour of duty in peacetime, working in a supply warehouse at 29 Palms. Nice assignment if you can get it: it beats getting shot at, and you have the privilege of telling people who outrank you where to go and what to do. It all happened some years before I was born.

It was free admission, no uniform required.... I do know San Diego Zoo gives free admission to uniformed military.

I personally dislike the current rules allowing them out in DigiCam but understand it as different types of uniforms can be expensive for the average soldier.

Every Soldier is issued the uniforms and given a 500 or so dollar a year clothing allowance...

The ACU in public places rules is not cool, coming from 6 years overseas where it was forbidden to wear them off post unless you were coming home , this is a big change.. There is absolutely no reason you need to wear your ACUs to anywhere but work....

It's only the US Army that has gone with that new rule allowing Soldiers to wear their cammies in public. A shame so many Soldiers are going along with it, and wearing them to Disneyland for goodness sakes.

As for free admission... in 2009 everyone in America got in for free, on their birthday. Did they also have a separate program passing out free tickets to the armed forces too? Or was it just Marine/Sailor/Airman etc. got in free on their birthday like everyone else?
