He was semi-retired and a drug addict and needed the money but felt somewhat sheepish about being in such a bad movie. Then, he died halfway through filiming and Ed Wood put some guy in a cape and had him wander around with his face covered, as if Bela was still around. But it is so blatantly obvious which scenes have the real Lugosi and which do not, that it makes the movie even funnier.

    Bela's movie wife, Vampira (!), hated her lines so much that she refused to say them, so Ed made her character non-speaking.
