He didn't go blind due to macular degeneration, but rather his problemis the degneration of his optic nerve, the conduit if you will that connects his eye to his brain, His eyes are fine, it's just that what they see can't be sent to his brain effectively. Regenerating nerves is much different than regenerating material in the eye. Nonetheless, it is incredibly encouraging news.
