At the risk of spouting blasphemy, I think both versions have their good and bad points. For me it's simply a slightly different experience in the Tiki Rooms, and both are enjoyable.

Then, as each new Disney star arises, have one of their songs intergrated. I would have thought that was the original idea.

I don't hate the New Tiki Room either. Like Dan, for me it is just something different. Both the old and the new show are not on my A list of attractions anyway.

Iago and Zazu are not even close to being in porportion with the other birds, this comes mostly due to the fact that Zazu and Iago (especially him) are more cartoony than the other birds they sing with. ***Spoiler Alert *** That tiki god that pops out of the fountain is scary for most children and strange to most adults. *** End Spoiler Alert *** Overall it is badly produced show and while I could see an update to the Tiki Room being a good thing, this was not. The one thing I did like was the little fountain pre-show, that was kinda cute, but even there I like the Tiki Gods preshow better. I for one am glad Jose is still running the show at DL.

Spoilers will abound, so read carefully - >The storyline is broken up and doesn't flow smoothly.< I just don't see this. It's been a couple years since I've seen the show but here it is, as I recall it. The show starts normally, like the old show, then is interrupted by Iago, the new owner, telling the birds they have to dump all that old Tiki crap. Zazu, also a new owner, warns Iago about the wrath of the Tiki gods. After a bit of bickering and singing, the Tiki goddess comes out and zaps Iago. Iago, now a believer, realizes that they can make a ton of money with the tiki theme. And then they all close out singing. Nothing broken there - seems to flow totally smoothly. >It's rough dialogue are cut with poorly performed songs don't do it much good.< I guess performance is a matter of opinion. The songs are somewhat dated, but I thought they were performed as well as robotic birds could perform them. >Iago and Zazu are not even close to being in porportion with the other birds, this comes mostly due to the fact that Zazu and Iago (especially him) are more cartoony than the other birds they sing with.< They're out of proportion because they're the main characters, and totally new to the Tiki Room universe. And they're more cartoony because, well, they started out as cartoons, while the tiki birds and flowers were created to look incredibly lifelike. I don't know exactly how you'd make a cartoon look more lifelike, or why you'd need to. >That tiki god that pops out of the fountain is scary for most children and strange to most adults.< I'll give you that she's kinda scary, probably as a result of Eisner's desire to be more scary (kinda like Alien Encounter!). But I've never seen kids freak out, and I as an adult find her most interesting. Look, it's not the greatest theater in the world. And maybe the Imagineers could have done better. But I think they did pretty darned good. And I really like that there are 2 tiki shows, as opposed to having exactly the same show on both coasts, like HISTA and ITTBAB and the Muppets.

I like the edgier humor - without getting to the gross out level of Stitch's encounter.

Iago has to be one of the most annoying characters and its great to see him get blasted by her each and every time, LOL.

However they could have updated the show without insulting the original or using off theme music. I believe the original idea was for a dinner show. Take that idea and add the interactive living character program and next time they update it I think they could create a wonderful, longer, more intimate, on theme show where the characters interact with the dinning guests.
Originally Posted By danyoung >My problem with this version is that it insults the original...< I've seen this argument before, and I can see where it comes from. My take is that Iago is a very rude, insulting character anyway. He's warned that his insults will upset the gods, which turns out to be true. And by the end of the show, he's all on board with basically the original tiki room concept.
Originally Posted By trekkeruss <<they could create a wonderful, longer, more intimate, on theme show where the characters interact with the dinning guests.>> Yeah, just what WDW needs: more character dining. I'd rather keep the show as-is and be able to see it, than need to have a reservation made six months ahead.

I'm not an Iago (or, for that matter, a Gilbert Godfrey fan), but I find Iago in the Tiki Room actually funny at times. I love some of the one-liners he utters as you're leaving the show. "Oh, that's real smart, walking under a bird!". The show is 'ok' while the original was 'good'. Both versions are still fun.
