The story is funny though. I mean, what kind of marketable skill is barista for an ex-con? Most baristas I've seen are the 16-year-old-peppy-cheerleader-type. The whole thing is just sort of humorous.

But I bet they *are* serving coffee to the inmates. What would be the point of making coffee and not selling it? Other than learning this "skill" which won't be particularly marketable as far as I can tell. They may as well make some cash for the prison system while they're at it.

Also you have to remember what sort of prisoners receive vocational training. Those that will be cycle back to the free world in a short time and not long term prisoners.

Most prison systems have elimited cash and inmates wear bracelets, that track as well as hold their "book" or money available to spent at the commissary. An inmate can earn money or someone can put money on their books (a family member, accountant, friend...). Also if you gamble you keep track of who owes you what so if they have earned a trip to the commisary than they can pick you up things like ramen, cheetos, candy, sodas or whatever they are able to purchase (varies from facility to facility and the discression of the warden). Now this really only holds true for facilities that use a "dorm" system and not solitary blocks. Usually county or state jail and not federal prison.

Ain't that the truth Pennyring?! One of the best thing about moving away from Seattle was never having to see him on TV again. LOL!
