They did so not knowing that their now 14-year-old son, Jordan, was gay and would later contemplate suicide because of the church's steadfast belief that homosexuality is a sin that would cut him off from his family not only here on earth but in the afterlife... Montgomery said she has hope for Jordan's future, and the family is stronger because of its journey. "I am a better person for having a gay son," she said. "I love differently, and I love more openly. I didn't realize the judgment I had before I realized that having a gay son was a great blessing and not a burden.""

More importantly he is avoiding the most critical aspect of acceptance, which is honestly embracing himself as homosexual. To each his own, but my impression is that he's just beginning a dramatic personal evolution, and his devout focus on "praying away the gay" was more about an internal conflict than it was about other people's sexual preference. It's wonderful that this terrible organization is dissolving, but Alan Chambers has some serious personal issues to work through. I wish him well. Here is an excerpt of his public apology in front of a group of gay men and women. It's very powerful and quite moving: http://gawker.com/watch-the-pr...31773549
