You'll want to check in earlier than you are told to for the buffet. Apparently a CM sets up between 7:00 and 7:30pm by the bridge in front of POTC. Get you name on the list immediately for best seating upstairs.

As far as the light standard, we use it often. It's right at the Tom Sawyer launch area. Next to the light and sound control booth. If you are there really early, its underneath the metal doors in the sidewalk by New Orleans Square. There are two or three as far as I know around the ROA sidewalk.

About 10 minutes before showtime, this tower rises up on its big hydraulic pole, and you are now front and center, perfectly positioned for the show, without having to spend 3 hours holding down a prime spot!

The Riverside check-in is where you described and is first check in, first seated. Balcony check-in is at the Gallery. The buffets are slightly different, with the balcony offering a few more things that Riverside (such as cheesecake).

Price is the same for adults. Kids are $10 less for Riverside only.

On the balcony, guests are seated in the order they purchased their tickets -- not what time they checked in.
