There is always live entertainment on the streets - just a great place to hang. Dubai - the most cosmopolitan city in the world, a real east meets west with increadible new buildings springing up in the Middle East. It has the old boudin culture mixed with a Rodeo Drive/Las Vegas/NYC buzz. Very unique. Hong Kong - this is an increadible city, mixing a little bit of everything into a high tech, amazing culinary masterpiece. Oh, I love so many places, there are many more - Chicago, Philly, Chester, York, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Cairo, Brussels, Istambul, Fez, Durban, Madrid, Grenada, Rome, Venice, Prague, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Athens, Jeruselem far too many. Most overrated cities to me - London, Paris, New York. Sorry guys.

Nurm, when you say "example of mankind" I think rather differently than if you say "best" or "favorite" (my fav is probably your hometown actually). Even though I've never been there, I'd say Shanghai is the most impressive LOOKING city. Don't know too much about it. As for places I've been, Tokyo and Hong Kong are impressive but New York wins out because of the incredible diversity of cultures there.

Paris - I loved it more than I thought I would since I speak no French, but my late husband did. He started out virtually every encounter by saying, in French "My French is not very good, but I would like to try..." and immediately people became friendly, helpful and bilingual. They appreciated the courtesy of his trying to speak their language. A great walking city. Montreal -- Also wonderful, very nice people and a very European feeling for a North American town. San Francisco -- I hadn't been there since 1968 until last year - so many changes and I really, really loved it. Can't wait to get back. St. Thomas - Probably one of my favorites for the laid back atmosphere. Boston -- Another great walking city and I love the history.

It's such a physically beautiful city, and a great place for the things I really value. Powell's Books is such an important part, as is the whole arts/culture scene. The dedication to history and conservation is another big part. Portland lives with its history, as opposed to either destroying it, or preserving it in amber. I also really, really like the rain there. Odd what we miss about a place. Other US cities I love include Washington DC, Atlanta, and (oddly enough), Indianapolis. Outside of the US I would also choose Paris. It is simply so beautiful, so historic, so cultured... well, it reminds me of Portland. There's even river running right through the center of it. Also like Barcelona (SO beautiful!) and Rome (SO historic!).

It's a gem.

Las Vegas-Really what more needs to be said. 4. Puerto Vallarta-Modern with still a hint of old world charm.
