I'm not really sold on the art style for this though. It reminds me of a lot of the stuff from Fantasia 2000, when they weren't quite sure how to integrate computers into 2D animation yet. It was fine at the time, but has made the film incredibly dated; this just feels strange for a new creation

You aren't sold yet? I think BH6 is the most promising animated Disney movie in recent years. I didn't expect much from Tangled and Frozen and both movies turned out to be great. So hopefully it's not the other way round this time, since I'm already very excited about this one.

I hope it does well, since we need something to balance out all the Frozen we've been getting, but I don't have high hopes for enjoying it myself

I chose not to watch the trailer for Feast. As Ferret pointed out, it's one-seventh of the actual film. Talk about spoilers!

I'll be seeing BH6, so I don't need to be sold on the companion short.

It definitely isn't anime - it is a homage of sorts but very American and very Disney in its execution.

Check out The Wind Rises - probably the finest piece of Japanese animation I've ever seen. It is difficult to compare to the likes of Spirited Away and its ilk but it is a stunningly shot movie. I've never seen direction like it in animation before.

Boy, do I disagree. By far my least favorite Miyazaki movie. I was very disappointed. Different strokes...

From what I've seen of Big Hero 6, it really doesn't look anything like an anime film. The art direction, animation, and pacing that we've seen so far all feels very Disney (possibly Pixar?) to me

Wow - I'm really surprised. I just loved the fact that the studio has almost gone into the live action world - From up on Poppy Hill was the transition. I just loved seeing a semi-fictional tale on a factual story.

    Different strokes indeed.

It amazes me that Ghibli has such a diverse group of movies that everyone can come out with a different list. I adore Spirited Away and Totoro in the fantasy section. However I also love Poppy Hill and The Wind Rises.

I just wish animation wasn't reserved solely for family movies.

I do seem to be in the minority. But then I really don't like Grave of the Fireflies either (I know, not Miyazaki, but it is Ghibli). I'm in an even bigger minority there. I seem to be the only person who wasn't moved to tears by that one.

Although it's approachable for kids, I certainly wouldn't say that The Wind Rises was a family movie. Grave of the Fireflies and even Hunchback also have a more adult tone than most, but are probably more family-friendly than The Wind Rises

I wasn't overly impressed by it either. It had been talked up to me a little bit, which I'm sure led to some of the disappointment, but overall I just didn't get it. It was a story about a stubborn kid with an obnoxious little sister who had multiple people offer them help that they turned down. I know it's supposed to be a big metaphor and everything, but it's hard for me to be sympathetic for characters that I just don't like. What can I say? I'm a grump!

I realize that, to someone who watches the real thing, it isn't.

But to someone who avoids it, it sure looks like anime.

It's like saying, "Mom, this isn't a science-fiction movie. You should watch it," and then there's this one little Sci-fi element that pops up, that a true SF fan would hardly consider, and BAM! she's tuned out.

But, as I said, I'm going to see it. The trailer was funny enough to make it happen.

Really? The characterisations look very Disney CGI to me. Very much in the vein of Bolt.

Yah, there are some Asian-inspired visual elements (like the pagoda-clad Golden Gate Bridge), but that's about as close to anime as it comes, and none of those appear to have any bearing on the actual story

That's how it hit me too. I'm not dying to see this at the theatre yet... I may change my mind when the reviews come in, but I'm not big on superhero movies in general.

Early notices sound good, though. And if it's a quality pic, that would make four in a row for WDFA, yes? (After Frozen, Wreck-it Ralph, and Tangled.) Maybe even five, if you liked Princess and the Frog (which I liked but didn't love). Not bad for a studio that was considered in decided decline or even on the ropes not that long ago.

I guess Winne the Pooh was in there as well... that just seemed like an afterthought somehow, though I know it has its fans too.
