Balancing, moving the body to go where you want, and I also did some extra moves (one trainer suggested it) with the Segway to help my feet get less tired (moving the Segway side to side a bit on the empty trail). So you are exercising, it's just a different way.

But we also went along areas that were not paved, including near the horse barn/petting zoo, beach area, nature trail, etc. We didn't go into any real sand, because that would be another lesson altogether! I didn't time it, but I'd say 30 - 40 minutes learning, and the rest riding. It was definitely a fair amount of riding time. Everyone (the 5 of us!) between the couple of tours really enjoyed it.
