I learned that: -- Fortune Cookies originated in Japan, not China. They were exported to California, where they became an instant hit in Japanese restaurants. When the Japanese fell out of favor with the US at the time of WWII, and Japanese restaurants could no longer survive here, Chinese restaurants quickly appropriated the Fortune Cookie "tradition." -- Fortune Cookies are pretty much a US phenomenon now. -- "Ancient Chinese Secret"? Well, not so much. One guy -- a retired US professor -- has a near-monopoly on writing the little pearls of wisdom that come folded inside those almond- or vanilla-flavored crunchies. There are thousands and thousands of fortunes in the data base. Fortune Cookie manufacturers rotate groups of them when they print batches. Almost makes it sound as though the whole thing is not mystical, doesn't it? But then we have wonderingalice's and Ursula's experiences to remind us that Confucious works in mysterious ways, don't we? (Never mind Lisann's fortune. Unless, of course, we later find out that at the next full moon... she stumbles home exhausted from work, collapses on the bed, turns on a little TBN, and watches "South Pacific" until she falls asleep. Or... leaves work late, runs into the local Boston Market to pick up some supper, and bumps into a tall dark stranger...) These things don't lie.
