I LOVE my Magellan. The only problem with it is that you can't download celebrity voices for it. Other than that, it is awesome.

I've used it several times myself and have no complaints about it. It's a fantastic device, recalculating directions should you make a wrong turn. (And so far, my daughter keeps finding her way home, so it really, really works.)

Even if I'm traveling regionally and know the directions, I like to see my estimated arrival time.

One thing I don't like about Garmin is some locations that should be in it are not in it.

(I didn't know some vendors offer celebrity voices---or that people wanted them.)

Really? I don't see why not. It doesn't transmit or anything like a cellphone. We did this flying to Florida on Southwest couple years ago, and none of the flight attendants seemed to mind.

Is that an FAA rule or up to the individual airlines I wonder?

Be sure to lick your thumb and forefinger when turning the pages, 2ooney.

When you're travelling on a highway/interstate, and there's an exit for another highway/interstate, it tells you to stay in the far left lane. Usually, this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but driving in southern California, where almost every other interchange is some sort of freeway (including those surface streets that get Highway funding!), it gets really old after just a few exits. I'm hoping that there's a way that I can turn it off, so that it only tells me when I actually need to exit, not when I need to keep doing what I'm already doing, but I haven't figured it out yet.

On the other hand, my parents have a Garmin (though one that's probably 6 years old now), and it seems like it's more difficult to use. There aren't as many options for the settings, and there are certain things that it just can't handle (roundabouts!) without freaking out. And if you miss your turn, it's really annoying about telling you that it's recalculating, while the Tomtom just updates you with where to turn next. I don't know if these are issues that have been fixed with more recent models (since it was one of the first ones on the widespread market), but I'd say that there are good and bad things with both brands.
