By SARAH TULLY The Orange County Register Comments 0| Recommend 0 The Walt Disney Co. today announced major changes to Disney's California Adventure theme park in Anaheim . The major additions will include: • Cars Land : A 12-acre addition that will be based on the "Cars" movie, including an attraction called Radiator Springs Racers. • Unique Nighttime Spectacular: A water and lighting show with a 9,000-person viewing spot. • Entry Plaza and Gateway: A new entrance that mimics California streets at the time Walt Disney entered the state. The area will have a 1920s feel. • Little Mermaid: A dark ride based on the movie. The company plans to release more details at an 11 a.m. news briefing at its Glendale offices.

We have the new parade that's coming to AK. plus all of the resent refurbs HM, and SSE, with more scheduled. I'm sure I'm overlooking some other things that I just don't remember right now. Anyway, at least WDW isn't being overlooked altogether.

There are at least five attractions I can think of that are in the pipeline, and that doesn't include Star Tours. 2.0, which should arrive just in time for the park to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This is the park that will see the most 'new' stuff the next few years. EPCOT will be getting lots of attention as well, use your Imagination to come up with some places that need attention. They'll likely be getting them. The World Showcase is on a major modernization plan right now, with most of the focus on dining. But attractions won't be overlooked. I think there's a great chance if you visit Canada in the future that you'll get wet (and I am not thrilled with that prospect). DAK has Rivers of Light on the way, although likely not as soon as I expected. And Joe Rhode always has BIG ideas. The only park in question (as usual) is the MK. I really know of nothing that is going in there. Space Mountain and Jungle Cruise will both get major redos much like Mansion, and to a lesser extent Small World and PoC. But as for a real new E-Ticket? No clue. I'm not sure they do. Maybe Scott Trowbridge can help.

I would like to have little mermaid in fantasyland and I have had an idea for another attraction that would get stitch out of tommorrowland and into fantasyland and kids would love it. It uses the technology of roger rabbit but is based on lilo and stitch. I also don't want to see another raft ride at any park and why is it that world showcase's attractions are either movies or have something to do with boats?

Over at EPCOT the second floor of Imagination is still unused, The Wonder of Life Pavallion is permantly closed, much of the Rose Garden has been paved over for I have no idea what ( where Peru is holding their contribution to the Food and Wine Festival ). I'm glad to hear that DCA is getting some much needed attention. However, I can't help but think that WDW, particularly MGM requires some triage. In terms of EPCOT, we have been "Wishing" for years for new Pavallions and/or new attractions in the World Showcase area. Meanwhile the Future World area over by Energy, tWoL, MS needs help. Test Track seems to be holding its own. Oh yes and can they please, please, please replace Honey I Shrunk the Audience.

I'm not saying Stitch's Great Escape is a good ride, I'm saying it fits in thematically with Tomorrowland. Themed lands at Disney (with the exception of Epcot's Future World) are 95% aesthetic, and only 5% the overarching idea of the place. For instance, Aladdin's Flying Carpets fits thematically into Adventureland, but it completely destroys the land's sense of place. It puts a desert in the middle of the jungle. It feels wrong. However, Lilo's house fits perfectly into the jungle setting of Adventureland. So even if Lilo and Stitch isn't Adventure, it is tropical, and thus would feel correct and add to the sense of place. Sorry about that, I think it's off topic, but I can't stand it when people apply the literary definition of theme to theme parks (where an aesthetic definition is more appropriate).
