Seems like the Great Movie Ride is getting some updates. According to Jim Hill, this inlcudes removing the alien seen for Lord of the Rings, the entire Western scene being replaced with something that doesn't have the costly fire effect and more.

I hope they don't take out
the Western Scene, that was my favorite part of the ride.

Also, If you want to here the interview w/ Jim Hill about the Great Movie Ride:

    Using that logic...

Why did Disney pay royalties for 'Alien' 'The Wizard of Oz' 'Tarzan' 'Casablanca' 'Footlight Parade' 'Singin in the Rain' 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' plus the rights to secure the use of likenesses of Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, James Cagney, Gene Kelly, Maureen O'Sullivan, Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Burt Lahr and Toto too?

Maybe a 'Great Movie Ride' wasn't such a grand idea to begin with.

I care about as much about 'Lord of the Rings' as I do about 'Harry Potter.' Which is, not at all.

If Disney has to go to competing movie studios to get content for the 'Great Movie Ride' then I say, just shine it.

Or go for the old 'Muppet Movie Ride' -- that was a real yawn-fest too.

But at least Disney has the rights to the Muppets, right?

And then Kermit and the gang won't have to do humilitating things like appear as guest judges on 'America's Got Talent.'

Well, yeah, but I was referring to the way current Disney seems to work. They seem averse to paying for royalties or licenses these days. Not saying it won't or hasn't happened (you brought up all the things they have done), but since they have a similar fantasy franchise, it seems strange to pay for rights to use another one from another studio. Especially when Disney has committed to making all the Narnia films.

Maybe that's because there have been some tough lessons learned with the properties that grant the licenses. The Pooh licensing agreement comes to mind as a big example of why this isn't always the best way to go. Also, you can look next door to Universal Studios where Nickelodeon started out, and they have since changed their licensing agreements so that those characters are no longer in the park. When you are planning for the long haul, licensing someone else's characters doesn't always make the best business sense. There's simply too much control in the hands of the party that owns the character, and they put up very little risk in granting the license to someone that will spend tons of money to promote those properties -- only to have the property owner decide to pull out or change the terms of the license years down the road.

Any of them that there MGM, Disney got for really, really cheap. Disney got a really good deal on using the MGM name/logo and a certain number of MGM films.

But whatever "hot" property Disney DOESN'T reserve for their parks, I'd expect Universal (at least in Orlando) to get. Sometimes, it may just be a matter of keeping Universal from using it.
