One of my few behind-the-scenes anecdotes relates to this film...so be sure to come back tomorrow to find out what it is and what others have to say about the film. :)

    See you Monday evening.

There is extensive use of forced perspective in DARBY - enormous sets that required incredible amounts of light... so much so that they blew out the power substations in Burbank while shooting the thing. The leprecauns look perfectly scaled, and of course this was all done in-camera.

One of my favorite Disney songs. And best of all, sung by 007 himself, Sean Connery!

You see people do this type of thing with a still camera all the time. In order to light such an immense set they ended up knocking out the power to Burbank. I always found that amusing and have wondered how much media coverage it received. Nowadays it would be the lead story on all the local networks here and quite possibly capture a few minutes on CNN or one of those 24 hour stations.

Pretty Irish Girl is one of my favorite Disney melodies.

The comarderie between the King of the Leprechauns and Darby O'Gil amusing. I thoroughly enjoy the Leprechaun world and would've loved to see a further exploration of it.

I wish I had the "I Captured the King of The Leprechauns" tv special on tape. As I recall that special showcased Walt's talent for building anticipation for an upcoming project.

But perhaps I dreamed that somewhere.

Anyway, I love Darby O'Gill, an often overlooked Disney masterpiece, and The Gnome-Mobile is equally wonderful, although perhaps a tad too slapstick at times.

A lot of the cheapest players can be VERY easily converted to multi-region, though. This one, for instance:

    <a href="http://www.buy.com/retail/clearance/product.asp?sku=70010348&loc=114" target="_blank">http://www.buy.com/retail/clea
    rance/product.asp?sku=70010348&loc=114</a>

just requires entering a code with the remote.

Do a little googling on the subject of "region free hacks" and see what you can come up with. A whole new world awaits.

There's not enough movies today that take that route (matrix) and opt to make everything digitally (matrix) which, whether or not (matrix2) it's good (LOTR) subconsciously EVERYONE notices and it detaches them from the movie. How many computer special effects movies have been criticized for being cold and emotionless? Then think about the older movies with stop-motion or animated characters and how those were the characters we loved. i loved ED-209 from Robocop or any of Harryhausen's creations... even the original Star Wars trilogy had tons of them (those AT-ST chicken walkers from Jedi had more personality than 90% of the new Star Wars movies). Pixar doesn't count because they don't do special effects... they tell a story in a different medium, but I'd like to see what they would do with a Live Action project though it will never happen.

oh yeah... darby o'gill is the greatest! Yet another movie I watched as a kid that made me want to create special effects.
