The official figure is "well over 5 million" but short of the target of 5.6 million. But, in order to get to even 5 million, they apparently decided at some point to count all of the attendees during the several preview days prior to Opening Day, including the charity day. So, the "first year" attendance figures actually cover more than 1 year's attendance. And they cover the repeat visits from the pass promotion. And they include all of the free admissions for CMs and their families which were particularly heavy last fall when those admissions reportedly dominated park attendance on many days as opposed to paid attendance. So even with all of those promotions, a large reliance on CMs attending on their days off, and counting the "first year" of having several more days than 365, they still fell short. There's been several interesting articles in the South China Morning Post over the last week. You can find them in the scmp.com archive, but I'll quote a few tidbits here: "Disney has approved an attendance target of 5.7 million for the 2006-07 financial year, higher than the first-year projection of 5.6 million, the sources said. Asked to confirm the target, a spokesman for the park said: 'Attendance alone cannot truly reflect our overall business performance and hence we're not going to highlight it.'" There's also an interesting bit about the Opening party: "One piece of information that has been kept under wraps for a long time was how much Hong Kong Disneyland spent on its grand opening bash. "Sources said a member of the finance team had confirmed that more than US$15 million was spent to stage the three-day party last September. This included invitations, food, champagne, the cost of air tickets for overseas media, stage production, flying the Big Phat Band from Los Angeles, to perform, and accommodation for a 100-member taskforce from the US for between 60 and 120 days." Well, that's very interesting, isn't it?
