There sure was. They had the Tencennial event, which is the original use of the mirror castle float that has been in practically every parade at the Magic Kingdom in WDW since it opened, including its own Tencennial in 1981 (yep that same float has been in use, basically continuously, since 1965). They had a special episode of The Wonderful World of Color (linked below) with all sorts of song and dance numbers. I'm not sure what exactly was celebrated beyond that, but from my understanding, they made a pretty big deal of it.

Generally, Disney likes to celebrate anniversaries that end in a 5 or 0, so the 10th fits right in. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another park that did much for its 10th (I think DAK had Jane Goodall make an appearance, like the park's opening day), but they are seldom ignored to this extent. In all fairness, they didn't really do much for DL's 55th last year other than some merchandise, so I'm really not surprised by this, since they seem to be ignoring DCA's history (and existance at times, under the "Disneyland Resort" moniker).

And for what it's worth, I tried watching the opening day performance and ceremony linked in post 1, and it seems like the files aren't working for me. And in bigger news, as far as I can tell, there aren't any videos of it up on YouTube! I remember watching a video of the opening performance around the time of DL's 50th, and thought it was very well done, so I was looking forward to seeing it again, but I guess not.

I believe it was some time around Disneyland's 10th that Walt(who had a little over a year to live), made his famous statement to his Imagineers about "if any of you have any ideas of resting on your laurels, well just forget it!". And rest, they didn't. They were right on the heels of the New York World's Fair at that point, and just ramping up things like New Tommorowland, Pirates, Mansion, and the Florida project.

Actually, Dr Hans, you can see the four-leaf clover from the Google satellite view! It's near the center of the area, at about the 3 o'clock position.

Just checked it. That's a pretty cool detail. Thanks!

That is new information to me. I'm not so sure that float is that old. Can you point me to a source for that. If it is the case, I would like to "update my memory bank" and my informational archives.

To my memory, the mirrored castle float was introduced at Disneyland in the Christmas parade in 1984. I dug out the DVD of my Super 8 personal movies from the 1980's and that is the first it starts showing up in my films. It was used in the Christmas (and, occasionally other) parades/cavalcades up until the current A Christmas Fantasy parade took the place of the previous incarnation of the Christmas parade, I believe.

I can't remember if it was shipped to Florida in the '90's when they shipped some of our floats to them, or, if WDW got their own. But, I remember WDW having one from about the mid-1990's on. (I've asked my friend, the Witches of Morva, who lives down there and who might remember.)

Can you really blame them? If they had a 10th celebration, wouldn't they have to say something about how more or less crappy the park was when it opened? That they didn't even have an annual pass at first, thinking that regular day tickets were going to swamp the park? That DCA would fast become the place to be, and the original DL park would act as the overflow to DCA's bulging crowds?

Nope, no surprise here that they don't want to talk about the park's history.

They wouldn't have to. The 10th anniversary could be a year long celebration recognizing the entire resort expansion culminating with the opening of Buena Vista Street and Carsland. It's all about context and how they frame the celebration.

It is suprising that they wouldnt want to cash in on a bunch of 10th anniversary merch!
