The first year, they couldn't convince Danny Elfman (or so the story goes), and they had to create their own music that was seperate from the movie. It was basically a Christmas-ey version of Grim Grinning Ghosts with some extra lyrics thrown in, and a bunch of distorted Christmas carols. Personally, I much prefer that soundtrack (never got to hear it in the attraction though), as it feels a lot more like the Mansion to me. The way they do it now is like a completely different attraction than the rest of the year.

    There seems to be a bit of understandable confusion about the music for Haunted Mansion Holiday. It went through three distinct phases.

    The first year did not include any music from the film. The music track was a series of traditional Christmas carols, played mostly in minor key. The producer, Steve Davison, also introduced an "interactive" element. He noticed in repeated ride throughs while studying the Mansion that many guests would scream after the "Grim Grinning Ghosts" quotation in the Stretching Room. He added the quotation to the Graveyard, and had a "tutorial" in the queue line to encourage everyone to scream everytime they heard the quotation. The only official release of this music was a ride through on the deluxe 50th Anniversary Musical History of Disneyland set. It is on disc 6, 3rd track, and runs 16:40. (I am listening to it right now!)

    The second year did include music from the film, produced by John Debney, based on Danny Elfman's music and a certain number of traditional pieces retained from the first year. In place of the screaming interaction (which had proved a bit unnerving to younger guests the year before), there were specially written "Scarols" outside in the queue line. The lyrics were printed on broadsides, and recordings alternated with live performers who would encourage guests to sing along. The "official" album was released to reflect this version, complete with all the scarols, a medley of music from the film, and the attraction ride through. The official album also has a lot of narration by Oogie Boogie that is no longer used in the attraction. Incidently, a song book of the scarols was sold at the music shop on Main Street.

    The current version does not include the scarols. They may be used as background music, though I haven't noticed them in the last few years. The music box version may also be used in the FastPass area, but again, I am not sure.

    Here's a complete breakdown of the music that was used in each version of Haunted Mansion Holiday.

    YEAR ONE
    Outside: Music box version of Grim Grinning Ghosts (This may be from Phantom Manor);
    Foyer: Up On the Housetop w/quotations from The Nutcracker;
    Stretching Room: Deck the Halls (slow version) w/Grim Grinning Ghosts quotation;
    Portrait Corridor/Loading area: Jingle Bells;
    Hall of Doors: Deck the Halls (with the creepy plants memorably singing along);
    Seance Room: Carol of the Bells (simple violin version);
    Great Hall: Carol of the Bells (full version with chorus);
    Attic: March of the Toys by Victor Herbert;
    Graveyard: Jolly Old St. Nicholas, We Wish You a Merry (Scary) Christmas (there was also a repeated shout of "What's this!" as well as the Grim Grinning Ghosts quotation with guest interaction).

    YEAR TWO
    Outside: Scarols (Up on the Housetop, Scary Bells, Over the Graveyards, Old Mansion Tree, Wreck the Halls, We Wish You a Scary Christmas, The 13 Days of Christmas, God Rest You Merry Grinning Ghosts) None of these were the versions heard the year before;
    Foyer: Making Christmas;
    Stretching Room: Essentially the same as year one-- Deck the Halls (slow version) w/Grim Grinning Ghosts quotation;
    Portrait Corridor/Loading area: Kidnap the Sandy Claws (dixieland jazz/zydeco version);
    Hall of Doors: Kidnap the Sandy Claws (with plants still singing fa la la);
    Seance Room: Making Christmas, w/quotations from Jack's Lament;
    Great Hall: Kidnap the Sandy Claws (orchestral waltz version, w/quotations from Making Christmas, Jack's Lament, and Carol of the Bells);
    Attic: What's This, w/quotations from Deck the Halls and Jingle Bells;
    Graveyard: Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry (Scary) Christmas, What's This. (And the Grim Grinning Ghosts quotation is still there. My friends and I still scream when we hear it.)

The stretching music has always been the same as DlandDug mentioned (coolest part of the ride if you ask me). Also the wierd rendition of March of the Toys, first heard in the attic, now plays alongside Oogie Boogie and the wheel of fortune. My favorites are the ballroom music from year one and the current hallway/loading music (kidnap the santa claus).
