SO - I assume firstly that I need to purchase another set of software for my laptop. Is this correct? Most importantly I need Adobe Creative Suite, and I don't think I can install that software more than once.

Secondly, I need the ability to email fairly large pdfs, a few megabytes at least. Can I do that at a Kinkos? There is a computer running DSL at my Mom's but it's a PC and I have no idea how or if I can get files from a laptop onto it. Also I'd be using web-based email (adelphia.net) and don't know what size files I can attach. Same thing goes for Kinkos actually...

And I'm wondering if I can rent a laptop with the designer software and specs I need? Anyone know?

    Thanks for any help!

At the moment Dell has got base model laptops on sale for about $500 (plus $50 shipping). It's about as cheep as I've found and Dells are quite reliable.
You may want to call Adobe customer support and see if they will let you put the software on 2 machines that won't be used at the same time. Another possiblily is, uninstall from your desktop and install on the laptop.
As for your other questions, I would ask around amongst your freinds and see if you have a computer guru in the bunch who will help you. Although I find a USB jump drive or data traveler is a good way to transfer files between non-networked computers.

Actually the way that software copywright laws are written, you can install it on as many computers as one individual owns. However it cannot be used at the same time. So yes, you can install your software onto a 2nd, 3rd, ets computer as long as you are not using the software at the exact same time.

As far as a cheap laptop, Dell is a good way to go, also Rent-A-Center does laptops as well.

As far as large e-mails go, getting something that is pop3 and not web based usually solves that issue. Via my server I can send attachments as large as I want (now if the other person can receive them is another story). I would check if the server your using for your site now has the pop3 e-mail capabilites and use them. Otherwise if you dont have it and need a pop3 account and dont mind @peeaanuut.com as your e-mail address I can set you up an account. Let me know.

    Good luck!

you said you needed to send PDF files "at least a few megabytes" [I think that's what you said?" Most major web based e-mail accounts now allow 10 MB at a time of sending and receiving.

As for transferring some large files from a mac to PC and visa versa, how about a flash drive or portable hard drive? I use a flash drive to hand out large files when I am on the road, just plug it into a USB port and vaiola.

I use a Citrix client server to communicate between my companies server back east and my laptop, I can access any application [that they give me access to anyway] through the Citrix server, I think personal/home consumer Citrix accounts are around $20 a month, but I'm not sure. That will allow you to access your main puter at home from another puter remotely and you can use the files apps etc. [as long as they are compatible]

I'm not sure, but I *think* gotomy PC lets you do the same thing, I used to have that program but hated it, it gave my home PC trouble and messed up my registry on my old laptop.

You asked if you can send large files from Kinko's. Yes, from your e-mail account, or from a web based email account, the only limitations are the provider of that account.

Interesting about the Adobe software! I have ordered CS2 already. But Nutt, I'm not sure about what you're saying - altho I have MS Office that works that way, I know with Mac OS software you have to buy multiple licenses. I may be remembering wrong, but I thought when the current Quark software came out, it was encoded to prevent installation more than once.

Also I checked in my email account thru the internet, and I can send up to 10 MB! I'm doing a test right now with the 6MB pdf I had to send to a client yesterday.

As far as getting the files to another computer, I may be calling one of y'all when I'm there and can't figure out which wire is what, LOL! I'm so untechnical! I'll look into the flash drive. Citrix sounds awesome but I probably won't need it. I'll kepp that in mind for future use tho.

You're correct about Quark's licensing restrictions for recent versions, but I've heard that they've gotten so much flak they've changed this policy back to allowing a desktop and a portable install with the license. They're really hurting right now after years of treating there customers horribly and are doing what ever they can to bring back lost sales.

I've done it and it's absolutely amazing how well it works. Closest thing to computer magic I've seen.

Don't get the RAM from Apple, whatever you do!

A third party source will be MUCH MUCH cheaper!

    >>>I wouldn't use it at home since it's still not as powerful as my G5.<<<

Don't be so sure (unless you are using a dual processor, which I'm guessing you might be??).

My Powerbook is technically not as powerful as my G5 IMac (Same RAM, same specs, etc...), BUT field tests have shown the powerbook to kick more virtual butt in every way (for some reason).

My advice after today's big anouncement...lay low for a bit, see how the new super book looks under review, and then see if it's worth it (wish I'D waited lol!)...OR if the price of the powerbooks drops down (a good bet, I think).

You need only wait a couple of months I think...

Anyway, NEVER buy your RAM from Apple...don't get ripped off! ;)

    Good luck!
