These are some amazing credentials to back up her ringing endorsement, right? Is this a joke? Somebody pinch me, I think I'm having a comedic nightmare here.

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. Unlike other Guard units, it's on permanent active duty. Further, given that Alaska is right next to Russia, Gov Palin gets briefs on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism. Yes, there were other candidates for the VP spot that had more experience in foreign or military affairs than Gov Palin, and several that had more executive experience. But Democrats would be wise not to underestimate Gov Palin. She's at least as qualified as Sen Obama, but she's only running as VP, not President.

And I have to warn you -- this is a tricky question from me. I'm very familiar with ballistic missile defense systems and National Guards don't get much exposure to this. If they are on permanent duty, its only to support active duty forces from the Air Force and Navy that are doing this work. So their mission is logistics and support, not actual ballistic missile defense.
