In March they ended up over by Knotts in a what she called sketchy motel. They are college students so $$ is important but they also want a safe place.

    Suggestions?

Hotwire shows you the price up-front, while Priceline asks you to submit a bid. You might get a slightly better deal with Priceline, but you have to know how to use that system to your advantage. For a detailed explanation of that process, read the hotel FAQ at biddingfortravel:

Bidding can get you a better price if you are willing to read up and learn how to "work the system" and/or start by bidding low and be patient to rebid after the required time.

Stick with 3 star and up and you should be fine. The price savings are much greater in those categories, too.
