I think this (very long) article has it exactly right, and it's just as much an indictment of Bernie Sanders and his followers as it is of the Republican nutjobs. In short, we "reformed" the system into something that was unworkable - that was so accountable to We the People, that nothing can stop We the People from blowing it up. The party apparatus that we've worked so hard to dismantle over the last few decades in the name of Democracy was, in fact, the immune system that made it all function. And now it's collapsing and we're sick. The worst part: No viable solution. None. This is the direction everybody WANTS to go, without any concern or even concept of the consequences. So here we go.
