The original cut was paced and designed to allow for commercial breaks. But now there are more commercial breaks than there used to be, so last night's showing was quite out of whack. They would breakaway at mis-timed moments (as a refrain from "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" was about to begin) for a commercial break, yet they had edited over the places where commercials were designed to go (as when the Grinch glares over the front of his sleigh down at poor Max before the sleigh ride down to Whoville begins).

Certain small bits seemed a bit edited as well, probably to fit the remaining alloted time.

I'm glad ABC shows this each year, it's a real treat. But I do wish they'd figure out a way to work within the original timing and pacing of this holiday classic, which had plenty of spaces for logical commercial breaks already in place.

It wasn't until we bought the movie on DVD 10-12 years ago, that I noticed the missing piece.

And you have to wonder what nimrod is in charge of deciding where the breaks should go, and what gets edited out. I also wonder if the network ever approaches a company and asks them to sponsor the whole thing. Seems like Kraft used to do that years ago for shows. Hallmark Hall of Fame maybe?

The other night, we stumbled across 'When Harry Met Sally' and they actually edited out part of the scene when they're playing charades. Bruno Kirby's character, screams out 'Baby fish mouth!' at Sally's drawing. And then he and Billy Crystal have a little exchange about 'baby fish mouth is sweeping the country.'

It was all edited out. They just cut from where they're guessing to when Sally gets frustrated and blurts out the answer. So about 12 seconds from that scene.

    Weird, right?

That would make a lot of sense. That always made a TV special feel even MORE special back in the day.

And bring back those little bumpers before a special showing, too! A little fanfare is good for the soul.

Hey, the holidays haven't been the same since they stopped airing Santa sliding across the snow on his "Noelco" electric razor.

I hear you! The holidays can't truly begin without seeing that one.

I know that's crazy talk, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

But seriously, I'm too modern to watch it on regular TV. I just pop in my trusty VHS copy.
