From the looks of things on the map, would it be better to just go to Kowloon and not bother to go all the way into Hong Kong unless you can get an earlier start?

Depending on which station on the Island Line you want to go to (assuming the first station is not the right one for you), add maybe 10 minutes. So I would not let HK Island vs Kowloon sway your decision - make it based on where you want to go. I think I clocked it at 25 minutes from boarding the subway at the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, making connections, and getting off at the Disneyland Resort Station. Add a 20-minute walk to the HKDL Hotel, and wait for the first train to arrive, and it's about an hour each way to get into town and back from the resort hotels. Definately doable, but I was happy with the way I did my recent trip: two nights at the resort hotel, then the rest of the time staying at a hotel in town. There's nothing to do at the resort after park closing time except drink in the hotel bar (well, I suppose you could have dinner ), and even that is not exciting.

I'm staying on Disney property the entire time. First trip to HK in many years, so I wasn't too comfortable moving hotels and such. Hoping to learn the ropes this time, and for future trips I can make adjustments. You mentioned the 20 minute walk from the hotel. Is it usually faster to walk rather than waiting for the shuttle? Thanks for the info!

However... my trip from the HKDL station into Central (in HK Island) was almost 40 mins, each way.. Depends on how long you have to wait for your conneting train at Sunny Bay station. But it's doable... Just keep in mind how late into the night the trains into HKDLR run. Like SuperDry said.. it's a 10 min walk from HKDL hotel to the station... It's about 6 mins from the Hollywood to the resort station by bus.

HKDL is unlike any of the other Disney resorts as present, having no downtown Disney or anything else to do (TDL used to be like this, before the expansion, but downtown was NOT so far away and there was always lots of "Japanese" stuff to see and do as little as one train stop away). I was REALLY glad we stayed in Kowloon and then transported over for the day. HKDL is REALLY isolated (this is a GOOD thing, it's very "exclusive" and "resort" looking), and until they add some sort of DTD or whatever, it really seems a drag to stay there (ESPECIALLY since the park itself closes so dang early so often)...granted the hotels are very nice, or so I've heard. However, if you insist on staying "on property" (that would not be my advice, I'd strongly recommend changing your plans if possible to do something like SuperDry did), it's not THAT bad to get into town like everyone said. And as SD said, Kowloon and Downtown are very similar timewise so just go where you want. And make sure you know when your last trains are (you'll probably be disappointed to leave town so "early"), to avoid a fairly expensive taxi ride.
