Whose to say that you're going to get a cup that's brewed at the optimum temperature (190-195 degrees) for the proper amount of time (4-5 minutes)? Of course, everyone has his or her own opinion in what they like in coffee. Personally, I try to stick to the 2 level tablespoons for every 6 fluid ounces of water ratio and a brew time of 4-5 minutes. When I serve coffee, I always have two airtight pitchers. One of coffee, and the other of hot water. I put out a sign that says "If the coffee is too strong for your liking, add some water." I do this because you can weaken a strong cup of coffee, but you can't strengthen a weak cup of coffee.

Or at least tax coffee drinkers highly and keep all collected revenues for ourselves.

Being me, I did the math based on the directions the can gave, multiplied to the size we were working with. The church was using four times (!!!!) the amount of coffee they should have used. Any of you who are familiar with church politics won't be surprised to hear that the people I mentioned this to told me to drop it, since coffee hour was so and so's domain, and we wouldn't want to upset them.
