X3 was announced after X2 tore up the Box office. Nowadays studios look for franchises, and this is Disney's 1st legitimate franchise in awhile.(a non DTV franchise mind ya)

Disney is having problems getting anything right, even if the sequal sucks bad it is guaranteed 100 million just because of the anticipation factor. So this is a win/win situation for Disney. Disney is not the first company to milk a franchise until its dead and they won't be the last. Hollywood is having sequalitis and franchise love right now. Disney is just following the flow.

Shame on Disney for trying to make money ... (wishes LP had a rolling of the eyes smilie) ...

'Pirates of the Caribbean' is the first live action blockbuster hit for Walt Disney Pictures, possibly ever. On the contrary, by the time POTC2 hits theaters, we'll be good and ready to see what happens to Jack Sparrow and the rest of the pirates.

The most successful sequels stand on their own. I agree that it should be POTC:blah blah, not POTC2. I also think they need to wait until AT LEAST 2006. I DO think, though, that the story was well written enough that it could go in many different directions to explain the past more along with new future. This is what the Star Wars and Austin Powers legacies were both built upon. I guess what I am saying is make a new Pirates movie that just happens to use unanswered questions from the first as the basis for a story line. After all, people have been raving that this movie works b/c people don't have to have seen the attraction first. Shoudl be that people don't have to have seen Curse of the Black Pearl first.

Godfather 2, Rocky 2, Temple of Doom etc, they all built on the 1st one to make the sequal even better. That is what needs to be done. With that being said, 2005 is going to be crowded for the summer with Indiana Jones 4, Star Wars Ep 3, X-Men 3 (rumor), and a few other blockbusters. So 2006 is when we will see the sequal in all likelyhood.

To put it another way, only 1 other movie has done as good as POTC in its first full week drop wise. Drop meaning the % it lost from Sun to Mon and Mon to Tues etc. That film being Finding Nemo. Otherwise it is holding up better than any other film this summer.
