It would be very hard to run from them with only one shoe. Although, if you are really worried about pumas, you should know that making scary faces while hopping on a pogo stick and singing Dream On by Aerosmith at the top of your lungs is a proven method of scaring away pumas. It also works well for door to door salesmen and annoying neighbors.
