I have a person close to my family who is in law enforcement in another state where their BIG concern right now is the Mexican Maffia that has arrived there and has set up shop. It is a slap in the face to EVERY immigrant that has come to America LEGALLY and has jumped through ALL the hoops to become LEGAL-when more action is not taken against those that enter our country illegally!

The point is that the illegal workforce in itself represents a criminal element, one that would not think twice about using fake documents and stolen identifications to achieve their goals. There is a whole underground support force in this country that aids illegals in every way possible. Identification, Social Security, drivers license, you name it, and it is mostly illegal and under the radar. So you think they are working in slaughterhouses and sewer plants? Look again next time you drive through a construction site. Carpentry, Masonry, paving, underground, electrical, landscape, to name a few. All jobs that have seen wages and benefits decrease substantially because someone will simply do it for less. Do you people really think that the greedy, unscrupulous business owners using these workers are really passing the savings on to you? The whole illegal workforce is based on lies and the exploitation of our weak and shoddy system. They are a drain on our social services, hospitals, jails, welfare, schools, all while paying a fraction, if any, of the taxes needed to support them. Talk to my friend, who lost his leg in a collision with an unlicensed and uninsured illegal. He is crippled for life, with no legal or financial recourse, while the driver who hit him is simply sent home, with a free ticket to boot. Laws that would put a citizen in jail, or subject them to wage garnishment do not frighten an illegal, they simply get a new identity and are good to go! These poor, humble, hat in hand people have got some of you fooled. Some of us are onto their game.
Originally Posted By Kar2oonMan >>The point is that the illegal workforce in itself represents a criminal element<< Yes. It involves whole industries who employ people illegally. Not only does this rob us taxpayers many ways, it completly exploits the illegal workers, allowing them to be paid pennies for backbreaking work. But we do very little to actually go after the EMPLOYERS, instead focusing our wrath on the people drawn here for a better life. >>Do you people really think that the greedy, unscrupulous business owners using these workers are really passing the savings on to you?<< EXACTLY! I wish we'd spend at least SOME of our energy zeroing in on the AMERICANS who are living large off the backs of illegal workers. Stealing relief supplies, especially to sell, is about as low as it gets. Worthy of the death penalty though? I'd really hate to think life is that cheap.

Originally Posted By jonvn "Are you in favor of the death penalty for thieft, kozy?" I am. Pretty much. Depends on the circumstances. What makes these people criminals, and opens the door for their criminal behavior is that they have been criminalized by the idiotic laws we have in this country. By making them criminals by their very nature, there is very little incentive to want to follow the law. They are already illegal, and do not have a stake in being good citizens, because they are not by definition. This is what causes a lot of crime to breed.

Originally Posted By dlkozy >>>"Or is it the combo of thieft mixed with "taking advantage of a bad situation"?"<<< That's exactly the situation. It is not unusual during a catastrophe that the lowest of the low will come out of their dirty little hiding places and try to prey on others. Looters are in that category, IMHO. >>>"I don't think that deserves death myself...but strong punishments would be great."<<< What did you have in mind? If looters want to take the chance knowing that they will be shot on sight, that the shooter is a poor marksmen, let them.

Gotta love vigilante justice. >>Looters are in that category, IMHO.<< How about insurance swindlers? Contractors that jack up their rates after something like this? Should we shoot them, too? How about the people who made poor land management decisions that contributed to the intensity of the fire? Should they be shot? Gonna be awful noisy in California as we 'round up all these people and start gunnin' 'em down.
