But, somehow, I don't think they guy deserves to go back to jail. Thoughts?

In any case of this nature, I don't see why the "offender" (creepy as they may be) should be behind bars. And, why only him and not her? This is not a stat-rape case, as far as I read...why is only the male being prosecuted (he ALREADY spent time in jail for this "crime", in case anyone missed that part...)??

Anyone come up with a reason yet why the GUY is jailed by the woman is not punished?
Originally Posted By melekalikimaka <<But, the whole REASON why it's creepy to begin with is that the kids come out all wrong >> Uh, no, that's not why sleeping with a sibling would be creepy. It isn't creepy because of the law. I don't need a law to tell me why something is creepy or wrong. Generally, people feel something is creepy and wrong and then they create the law, not the other way around.

But to know ahead of time and then still do it, I dunno, that's just wrong. As for jail, that's an interesting call. I can't say I'm completely against the idea. I find it hard to fathom that a country would lift a law against incest. I believe one of the main reasons for laws such as this have to do with possible defective children, but I can't be sure. More to the point though, it's to discourage aberrant behavior between siblings who grow up together, especially unwanted advances from a predatory sibling that might otherwise go unreported.

Although, were many people prosecuted for things like that way back when some of these older laws were passed? Incest was such a taboo subject up until just the past 20 years or so.

The behavior itself is sadly more prevalent than you'd like to think, but as far as prosecutions are concerned, I'm not privy to those numbers. There aren't that many of them however for a variety of reasons, one being the humiliation the victim has to endure. Pleas are taken in most cases that are opened.

I'd be curious to see what the experience has been on those countries has been after legalization. Have there been many sibling marriages? Have the offspring of such marriages had lots of birth defects?

What happens is that you can get an increase in recessive genetic traits, but it does not mean that the kids will come out as bad at all. Way back when this is how things all went along anyway. People used to procreate with their siblings. In some societies today, it's considered proper for first cousins to marry, and they are very close to being direct siblings.

It is a very difficult thing to get your mind around. You have by genetic default, waaaaay too many of the same likes/dislikes, physical features, mannerisms, even opinions and morals believe it or not. Having said that... I would highly recommend giving these two the benefit of the doubt. This is certainly a situation that you CANNOT POSSIBLY judge what you would do until you walk a mile in their shoes. I will admit, IF I were attracted to her, I would consciously CHOOSE to NOT marry my sister, however, it would be an absolutely cognitive decision, unaffected by anything else. I mean my biological sister is as different to me as ANY woman that I didn't grow up with, didn't know. The insight on this situation is magnified for me because I was the only child adopted into the family in which I grew up in, and in my adoptive family I have another sister. However I grew up with her, and I can assure you, there is NO WAY ON EARTH I would EVER remotely consider.......anything, I can't even say it, with her. It's actually amazing how things turned out for my situation. There is something to be said for growing up knowing you were adopted, then finally finding your biological siblings, and for the first time in your life you are able to look in the eyes of a blood relative. There is also something indescribable about looking into the eyes of someone only to see subtle but sure eyes looking back at you, that look exactly like the eyes you see in the mirror. It's (the only word I can use is) odd, and what a bonus that they belong to a beautiful woman. Yep these two get the full benefit of the doubt from me, but I don't think I would have married my sister, ONLY because she is in fact, my sister.
