For many years, Disney has simply looked the other way while others have profited by selling this stuff and there certainly is a fanboi audience rabid for the good old days. But, much like a strong desire to monetize the archives (the real reason for D23 and events like the upcoming WDW Destination D)... people in Burbank have realized (with some nudging from Glendale) that there's value in everything from America on Parade to Horizons to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and that it may not be the best policy to simply let folks 'borrow' the intellectual property for profit.

I'm following this situation with a lot of interest ...

Plus, videos are up everywhere on youtube. Heck, I would buy from Disney if Disney were producing high quality videos. They aren't so the consumer has no choice but to go elsewhere. Wake up Disney!!!

Can there be copyrights on specific attractions, buildings etc? Or are there trademarks (in Europe we have three-dimensional trademarks, but I am not sure whether buildings can fall into that category)? Will they still be able to enforce their intellectual property if they haven't done so for quite some time?

I just hope that they will only target those who do it for profit, I would hate it if Martin Smith's videos had to disappear, they are a wonderful resource to find out more about the WDW which I never saw in person.

But this project is the first thing I hear about Next Gen which I can get excited about! I would love to be able to experience some of the lost WDW via this project.

By having it in the park, it will take away from the current vacations, and the new memories that Disney is trying to sell. If I go to WDW to just watch videos of WDW, why should I pay to go? That's stuff's already on YouTube.

Also, if they are using this for in-park stuff (presumably to be seen on cell phones, or some second generation of a My Pal Mickey concept), there's the inevitable comparisons with the park that's there today. While it might be great to show people what something like the Rivers of America used to look like, with two paddlewheelers, canoes, rafts, and keel boats all running, it might make their decades of cost-cutting even more obvious, even to the most untrained eye. We all know what it used to be, and what it is now, but I worry about what will happen if they show the general public what it used to be, while they're right there.

It might be a good way to entice people to come one more time, but it also seems like a good way to convince them to not come back for a very long time.

That's the thing, though... Disney doesn't have documentation of that stuff.

By tapping the ATIS marquee, I can watch a 3D re-creation of the ride. I can turn my phone left and right, up and down, and see everything as if I was riding the atommobiles.

...if it were like that, I'd buy it.

I guess they would be rather selective about where they offer it...

I have trouble believing Disney would ever offer something along the lines of the ATIS/Star Tours model. They're whole M.O. is to sell the idea that the place is better than it ever has been. I just can't see them investing the money to set up a system like that where you could virtually "see" the way the park used to be which inevitably will disparage the current offerings.

And I'm not sure why I would pay for it if I had to look at my little cell phone screen to be "transported" into the past. But then again, I admit I don't understand why anyone would watch a movie on their cell phone, either.

Heck, that thing would be a disaster pretty much anywhere in EPCOT. Could you imagine having something like that in front of Spaceship Earth and comparing the current graveyard to the lush entrance with crystal fountain that used to be there? Or how about comparing the current Innoventions plaza with the original Communicore Plaza, complete with trees and reflecting pond!!

But to do so means shutting down the folks who profit off of selling DVDs of Disney's intellectual property (some that are sold here to be fair), not folks like Martin Smith who put the stuff out for free. I've heard that many are concerned with how this is going to play out in the fan community since Disney has let this go for so long ... but I've also heard the mandate to do something about it is coming from Legal and Burbank.

The technology obviously has the Weatherman all hot and bothered with the possibilities ... and they can't be exploited when someone is selling Horizons DVDs for $24.99.

I was able to complete 2 online check-ins but the 3rd room keeps giving me Sorry please try again or call 800 #...Which I have every day with the assurance that this has been fixed and try again in 10 minutes, etc. Finally today they gave me the tech # to call...Guess what tech customer support told me. Needless to say I am not that stupid and the first line I go thru had better figure out how to get it all done. I am staying at Bay Lake Tower not El Cheapo Motel!
Hey I bet they Welcome Me Home!

If I were you, I'd go to the online check-in desk first (since it will have a much shorter line, or at least move faster), and explain the situation. I'd be surprised if they can't work things out for you there, but that is still a little rediculous!

I just think it is strange corporations spend all this money to purchase these techno systems to make us happier. Does anybody actually test this after it has been released? Lately the problems with online Southwest with their new improved rewards program has been legendary aggravating. All week daily DINGS are not appearing even tho their systems has sent me my Ding Alert! Bottom line: this is passed on to us We are paying for this nothingness! And yet we have no recourse to beg for a halt to improving all lives.
Thanks for the suggestion Ferret. Nice to know LPers care and want the best still.
    I am old fashioned:
Thank You and have a good day.
( Welcome Home always sounds so phony,by the way)
