I did go to Verizon and I checked out their latest "touch screen", it was sad by comparison, and what??? No iTunes???!!! Whatever you do, you can't discount the fact that none of the other phones have such a rich and fuctional copy of iTunes. That right there is the lock for me. The iPhone isn't really for high rolling corporate over acheiver types. (Not that that is anyone here, but that's what I perceive Blackberry's and the other's smart phones targeting.) The iPhone is for a far "simpler" person...an idiot if you will, just someone who wants movies, music videos, a few thousand high quality songs, email at the touch of a screen icon with no logging in, voice messages that are already local (downloaded) with no dialing needed, Instant Messenger style Text'ing, and internet access at the touch of a fingertip. And all the hubub about G3 and EDGE. EDGE is more than adequate. At the end of the day all the iPhone is is a FULLY functioning cell phone that doubles as a video iPod. Using it is sort of like Starbucks Coffee, you don't need it, but damn it sure is good. It's really more about a "coolness" than it is "high-tech." Let me give a better example. Many loooooong years ago I was a fry cook at McDonald's. I barely exaggerate when I say that a monkey could have done the job. Everything like the grill and whatnot was set up with illustration, basically if you will, icons. You didn't even have to speak English. You put the burger down, press a button, when the beeper goes off, you flip, press the button, beeper goes off, you pull the patties. And you could fully understand how to do this based on the pictures. Although flipping burgers was hard work and respectable, still any idiot could do it. And that is what in my mind is great about the iPhone. It's simple, you have to know ZERO about it to use it as a one stop shop for all things media related. I really wish I had had a Blackberry beforehand. But now there's no need. Ignorance is bliss. I simply love the device. It is truly ahead of its time. I'm by no means an Apple cult member. But I'm not resistant to giving credit where credit is due. If I tried Pepsi tomorrow (now remember I was born and raised in Atlanta so I may have to leave town after saying this) if I tasted Pepsi tomorrow and it was better than Coke, I would switch on the spot. But I'm very happy with Coke, so I probably won't even try Pepsi again for a few years. And I think many people are like that with smart phones. "How dare the common masses think that they can use a smart phone and do all the cool stuff on a touch screen that I have been doing for years with my (insert smart phone model name here). Well I'll burn before I try that new fangled overpriced gadget that them young whipper snappers are using! It's just a phone. ...with iTunes.

My XDA which is cheaper than the IPhone has touch screen, itunes capability with microSD ports for more storage, it is 3G (which is overrated IMHO) and it has a keyboard. The downside compared to the Iphone is it is bigger and heavier. As someone who used to be a high flying exec (and and someways still is), I hate blackberries - there functionality is limiting and they are very difficult/expensive to develop new applications for. The reason they have gained popularity is the hardware is cheap. But they are pretty rubbish in my experience. I like the IPhone in many ways, but please do not delude yourself that it is the only one with such functionality. In fact one of my colleagues got an Iphone to replace the XDA like mine, and he is really dissapointed.

Also, sons coverage with AT&T was spotty in our home while they were here over the holidays. The Verizon guy on the phone was very upfront and said Verizon should have taken Apples offer So, this past Sunday I suggested to DH that we go to the Verizon store and check out the "comparable" phones and see what he liked. He said he had now decided that he wanted to wait until after our "busy" season because he really wouldn't be using the phone that much and maybe by May there would be something new. UGH!!! This is what I get for marrying a non shopper! Saga will continue in May....stay tuned
