That is before Downey Junior's profit participation too. These Marvel movies are a huge gamble and my concern is when one actually tanks what the knee jerk reaction from the Studio will be. IM2 was pretty awful so I'd wager this movie is trading off of the goodwill generated by The Avengers. I think it probably will get to $1bn and will generate a lot of licensing royalties for consumer products. However the real test is how the follow-ups to Thor and Captain America do. Worth adding that Oz has almost reached the end of its run and topped out at $481m - that loses money for the studio - and a decent sized loss. I doubt we will see a sequel.

Captain America just about broke even - $140m budget and gross petered out at $370m.

Neither of those movies were intended to make 1 billion at the box office...
