I like Conan O'Brien a lot and I think he deserves a chance to make the Tonight Show work for him in his own way. Now there's bound to be booking wars, similar jokes, etc. Jay is a stand-up comic and not a great interviewer. I think Conan is a better writer and could be a better interviewer if given the chance.

We have what, Six "over the air" networks, and only 3 broadcast in the 10 PM hour. (Fox, CW and MyNetwork only offer programming from 8 to 10 PM).

NBC only needs to bring in a constant viewership, the cost of the "Jay Leno Show" is fairly low, yes, Jay makes the big bucks, but the rest of the production staff is paid at a much more reasonable level, and the Celebrities that will appear are basically paid by the company that wants their new movie/show/etc. plugged on Nationwide TV.

NBC Universal made a smart move, and while it is a "reduction" of prime-time programming that can be sold and repeated on other channels, it will make NBC a lot of money due to the fact that the show will be "new" most of the year.

But.... and this is a big but... NBC will make no money in syndication or on DVD/ season set sales which is sometimes really huge....

Plus even Jay Leno has to take 1 to 2 months of vacation a year, so it won't make as much money as NBC predicts.

I thought he hardly ever takes time off. And even when he does, it's to appear in Vegas and other places. He's the hardest working man in show business.

    >>it will make NBC a lot of money due to the fact that the show will be "new" most of the year<<

Plus, it's a heck of a lot cheaper to produce than a one hour episode of Law & Order type shows.

I just wonder, will it basically just be a 10PM version of the Tonight Show? Or is it some different format?

I do think Leno is funny, I just have a few different problems with this whole thing. This show is simply not appealing to anyone in my social group or family.

Well he claims it'll be different, but according to an early review of a test show, it really wasn't the case. I just don't see now booking wars won't emerge.

And now NBC has 3.5 hours of talk shows five days a week. Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, and Carson Daly. Even assuming these people appeal to different people, there's some overlap. Last I heard, Conan's overall ratings were down from where Jay was, but way up among 18-39 year olds.

Hey, maybe it'll work out great. But for now, I'm skeptical.

(Oh, and I'm pretty sure NBC is smart enough to figure Jay's vacation time into their projections. If not, they deserve to crash and burn for sheer incompetence.)

I doubt I'll tune in to 5 nights of Jay Leno. It will probably depend on the guests. By and large, I'd be watching Food Network, AMC, TCM, or any one of the dozens and dozens of other cable channels.

I'm sorry Deb, but it appears that NBC just cancelled your pillow for low viewership and high costs.

But be sure to switch over to MyNetwork and check out their new reality show "So You Think You Can Sleep?"
