I like your way much better. It's more literate and so much more cost effective. Plus, it avoids those pesky tape-burns that interfered with cogent discussion of the film's merits afterwards. So good-bye annual mail-merged Holiday letter about Aunt Bixie's little accident with her Big Gulp while test driving the PT Cruiser! It's personalized Mouse Ears and a copy of Jim's letter this year! Seriously, Jim. I love this. I've actually copied and pasted it into an email (with a few incident specific edits) and sent it along to a couple of friends. No kidding. And there was more than one embarrassingly accurate account that reflects my own experiences. (The Disney Store eye-rolling is frighteningly familiar.) A charming, witty and wonderful article, Jim. However, some people's derision may be due to factors that go beyond the reasons listed. Could it be that some people just simply feel bombarded by all things Disney and are tired of it? These days, it seems the business decisions at Disney are being made more on the basis of quantity than quality: "How much merchandising value can we get out of this particular movie or project?" I mean, how else do we explain this trend of raiding the vaults to make substandard, direct-to-video sequels to classic Disney films? We can joke about Michael Eisner needing more money to fund his retirement, but really... Once the promotion machine starts, we are bombarded with all the merchandising and hype. I'm really glad "Lilo & Stitch" is getting terrific reviews (and I can't wait to see it myself) but I'm already hearing about a proposed direct-to-video sequel and a TV series based on it. It's the Disney way these days to run everything into the ground. I realize a company has to grow and change with the times, but I can't help but think that Walt Disney is rolling around in his grave. I don't think I'm alone in feeling this, either. I am at least glad that through home video, I can at least recapture some of the Disney of my childhood. That's what is more important to me. I will proudly defend my interest in Disney, but I have my own criticisms as well.
