Polls show a solid majority of NY residents approve. Of course, on a personal level, this is huge. I can't put into words how it feels to finally be treated as an equal citizen in my own damn state. I happen to be away from home (in a state that will probably be one of the last to do this) but called my spouse as soon as I heard. I wanted to embrace him, to celebrate, but that will happen soon enough. We had talked about getting (legally) married in CT, but agreed we'd wait till our own state did the right thing. As far as I'm concerned, we already ARE married, and have been over a dozen years, since we stood up in our church and said "I do." But state recognition is important. I'm old enough to remember when being gay was something you felt you had to hide--those days are fading fast, thank God. Of course, it's not complete equality until it's recognized on the federal level, which will probably take 15-20 more years, unless the receding of bigotry accelerates (which is possible) or SCOTUS changes radically. There's still work to do, but... WOO HOO!!!!!
