Back when the Tiki bird house was still under new management, I would pick up the red Iago feathers from the floor of the Tiki bird house and mail a feather in each Christmas card.

Then I bumped it up to Christmas cards and stuff. Getting characters signitures is FREE. If I were going and I knew I had some upcoming birthdays then I would get some characters to sign some cards, Christmas, birthday, whatever. And then just mail them out at home when appropriate. Never hurts to be ready. The feather thing was kinda kewl. One time I had to leave a bunch of preposted and addressed Christmas cards at DHS with the cast members at the front of the park in guests services. And a cast member who was new saw the red feathers and had no idea of the significance. She asked about them and I told her. She said she thought it was a great idea. I had to leave the Christmas cards since I was told Mickey Mouse at the time was getting ready for Fantasmic and was not available. They assured me that Mickey would sign the cards and they would be mailed. Which did happen. I guess just because you may not see a specific character in a park doesn't mean you can't get a signiture. The HOT character signiture to get is suppose to be Pluto who signs his name name in the shape of a paw print. Again all free!
