Disney told the family there are no security camera in some of the parking lots including the Magic Kingdom. The article also says, according to the Sheriff Office and Disney security officers, car thieves are cruising the parking lots at local attractions with a handful of keyless entry devices until a car's lights or alarms go off.

Everywhere you park, there are signs telling you to do this, and that the owner of the lot isn't responsible for any loss (Disney prints it on the back of the parking ticket/card). I saw on the news this morning that someone had stolen the wheels off of an SUV at an area movie theater in a fairly nice area, during daylight. This seems a lot more surprising to me, since a theme park's parking lot is relatively quiet throughout most of the day, while a movie theater (at the mall) tends to have a lot more people walking/driving through. Still, nothing seems to surprise me these days, sadly.
Originally Posted By schnebs <<Somehow I suspect that they didn't do a good job of hiding things out of view.>> Totally agree, FerretAfros. The fact that these folks went to WESH to complain rather than just admit they did something that probably wasn't very smart leads me to suspect that there'll be a lawsuit coming against Disney soon, accusing them of not doing enough to keep cars from being broken into. Sorry, but Happiest Place on Earth or not, the Disney parks are still visited by plain old regular people, and some of them will take advantage of others' naivete/stupidity if they get the opportunity; you have to prepare accordingly.

This allows thieves to enter the car without doing anything that would appear out of the ordinary to security (unless they've been watching them troll the parking lots via security cameras, but - of course, there are no security cameras at Disney World's parking lots). They even close and lock the car doors when they're done. Sometimes a family gets all the way home before noticing they've been looted. Why this isn't a bigger issue is beyond me. Seems like something that car companies would want to fix before they get really bad press when a car owner is hurt or killed when confronted during an break-in in progress.

Perhaps the victims in this case had everything securely stored in the trunk. The thieves drive by, the trunk pops open, and the rest is history.

Still, crime happens everywhere. And, on a recent trip I made to WDW, I never left anything in my car or the trunk of my car during my stay. Why invite crime?

We always put our valuables in our car when at WDW rather than leave them in our hotel room when we go to the parks. We had our valuables stolen from our locked hotel room with a do not disturb sign on the door while staying at a Howard Johnson's and were told that they were not responsible for anything left in the room so at least if it's in the car we've made it a little more difficult to steal.
