More profit there for the studio. Besides, P&tF is just about out of gas. Why NOT release it on home video?

Right now people are tired of it. If you give them a break from it, chances are they will want it more. As good as Up was, I saw it twice in theaters and I really didn't feel the need to see it again at home. I borrowed a friend's DVD and saw it a third time, so I was kind of burned out on it (it's an emotional rollercoaster of a story, not one you can just sit back and watch over and over). If it was up to me, I would have waited a year or two to buy it for myself. I got it as a Christmas present, so I wasn't upset about it (it's a great film), but I'm definitely going to wait a while before I actually watch it. Familiarity breeds conempt.

In a year or two, those who saw it in theaters will have forgotten it and moved on to something else.

Originally Posted By mawnck >>Taking movies off the market for a while and then reintroducing them seems to work at some level, right?<< With the "Disney Classics," yes. But not with most of the newer flicks. Remember that recent two disc "Big Wave" version of Lilo and Stitch? Didn't think so.
Originally Posted By FerretAfros Actually, that's the version I have. I didn't want to get it when it was new because I really didn't think it was that great of a movie. After a few years, I was kind of sad that I didn't have it, so I got the Big Wave Edition version, and it confirmed my earlier belief that it's just not that good of a movie (but that's a different discussion for a different thread). If there are people out there who didn't absolutely love a film in the theaters, perhaps waiting a little longer to release the DVDs would get them to buy it. Then again, maybe I'm just crazy and in a tiny minority on this whole issue.

Releasing the movie on DVD soon after theatrical allows the DVD marketing to piggy-back on the initial marketing, saving tens of millions of dollars. People are still aware of the movie and don't have to be reminded. Soon there will be no difference - you will be able to see the movie in the theater, then buy the DVD as you exit the theater to drive home. Zero DVD marketing spending required.

I have a feeling it will do well on disc since so many people/families who would have normally gone to the theaters to see it were swamped with the holidays (thus why it should have been released nationally Thanksgiving weekend).
