I think Rushbo may have just helped seal it for Obama. Apparently on today's program, he spent quite a bit of time comparing Obama to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

    An excerpt:

    >>Here's another bite from FDR. This is January 11th, 1944.

ROOSEVELT: The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industry -- our shops, our farms, our mines of the nation. The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation. The right of every family to a decent home. The right to adequate medical care. The opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health. The right to adequate protection from economic fear, from old age and sickness and accident and unemployment. Finally, the right to a good education.

RUSH: This is just an incredible thing, ladies and gentlemen, as you hear FDR basically spell out what the Obama agenda is today: Second Bill of Rights: the right to earn of enough, the right of every family to a decent home, the right to adequate medical care, opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.<<

Does Rushie not understand how people who were around during WWII feel about FDR?

    Most. Popular. President. Ever.

    And he got in deeper:

    >>Folks, let me ask you again, we've been doing FDR's method here since FDR. FDR gave us Social Security. FDR set the stage for national health care.<<

So we're against Social Security? REALLY?

It apparently got a bit of a response ...

    >>Some e-mails in the break say, "Well, what's the big deal about the FDR stuff?" Come on, folks! What's the big deal about the FDR stuff? ... "Rush, some of us old people would like to recreate the FDR years." Hey, you're living in them! You're living in them.<<

Rush Limbaugh just told all those elderly people listening to his program that Obama is exactly like FDR! The guy who LED the USA through WWII!!

    Gee, THANKS Rush!

Lots more to read there - He played a lot of Roosevelt clips.

These people live in a world very different from the one we live in. They live in a world where historical context doesn't matter. FDR expanded government and involved government in people's lives. That's bad--period. One need not know the circumstances, the result, or much else. McCarthy went after Communists and denounced them--period. One need not know anything beyond that, including if the people he went after really were Communists, or that those in his own party grew to despise him.

Put simply, these people live in a world where facts and truth and evidence are whatever they want it to be. We cannot underestimate the power of that. Truthiness is a very real and very dangerous thing. We see it play out in these McCain rallies where people call Obama a terrorist. The mentality exhibited by Rush, or by McCarthy defenders, or by those kind of people, is the same, even if the degree of anger is different.

That's why so many of us are calling on decent conservatives to reclaim their party. It's not because we disagree with people like Rush. It's because we find them to be disconnected from reality itself, and that's not just bad, but it can be dangerous. We can sit down and disagree about policy. vbdad, among others, has explained why he thinks Obama's tax plan is a bad idea. I may disagree, but I can see where he's coming from and his arguments are rooted in *reality*. But how do you politely disagree with someone who says Obama is an Arab terrorist? How do you compromise with someone to put the country in the right direction when they think big cities aren't even part of the "real America?"

It's this disconnect from reality that some of us find so troubling and speak out so vehemently against. It isn't conservatism, or different ideas. It's this dangerous ability to invent "truth" out of whole cloth or so misunderstand history as to put our country in peril.

Megadittos, ecdc, but I think it was a BIG miscalculation on Rush's part to go there on his show. In the minds of most of the older generation, even Rush < FDR. I think this was the slap in the face a lot of his listeners needed to snap out of it.
