I attended and graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz and according to this guy it is the WORST school in America lol. Because its a hard leaning left school, we are supposedly all robotic left wing nuts 'indoctrin' to think that way and programmed for nothing else. Because yeah, I'm sure anyone who knows me know that I read a passage of Karl Marx every night, attend social revolution workshops on my days off and have all of Huey P. Newton speeches on my Ipod (although we DID have a Ex Black Panther teach at our school lol. It was Angela Davis and I think she is still there, but didn't take her class, ALWAYS full ;D). Anyway, yep that's me in a nutshell ;).

Anyway, can I say that SOME of the stuff he saying is true, sure, but I imagine MOST schools have a more liberal bias in America than not. And yes, UCSC is a very liberal based school (its a school located in a city where according to its own code 'clothing is optional' ;)). You can't deny that. BUT, the problem I have is he thinks that we are never presented another side OR that you can't challenge the other side. Not true!!

But I will be the first to say if you've voted for Bush, it would be a loooong 4 years lol.

Anyway, thought it would be interesting to talk about it and I'm getting nostalgic for my good old college days, especially on Wednesdays where it was 'Burn American flag' day. Good times *sniff*.

    Discuss and GO BANANA SLUGS!!!!!

The reps of these places is pretty bad, and what I saw for myself at UCSB was terrible.

UCSB is a school for spoiled rich brats to play in. I mean that's literally what it appears to be.

UCSC kind of is so odd that the education you get there is affected. No grades (which has changed), and such an extreme philosophy that it's just not good.

This does not mean you can't get a good education at these places, but in industry, when people say they went to either school, they tend to mumble, look down, and shift their feet a bit....

Regarding clothing optional, I am sooo glad that you explained the orgins of that dress code to me. My company asked me to attend a February job fair at UCSC to do some recruiting, and some of the students showed up naked and stoned, with resumes in their hands. I did my best to treat them with dignity by not laughing, not look downing and providing them with our company info just as I would with an other applicant. Then, a surfer dude came to my booth and was soaked to the bone, wearing a wet suit and carrying a sea-weed ladden surf board in his hands. After that, a few 1970's Elvis impersonators appeared along with a few girls dressed like hookers (boa, spiked heels, short-short dresses and all). Add in a guy with a 2-foot tall afro, and you have a job fair that was a hoot and a holler. But, most of the students (except the stoned ones) were very articulate. And, UCSC's career services has really become more strict on requiring professional student attire at future job fairs. Now, the UCSC students are actually more professional and prepared for job interviewing than students at other UC campuses.

I don't know much about UCSB, but my school IS different lol. I agree, although the 'no grade' thing is more of an option before actually. You can choose letter grade vs pass/no pass, but one of the GREAT things about UCSC is that professors or TA's had to write up a student evaluation and actually TELL you how did you perform in the class in terms of attendance, performance, participation, etc. It actually evaluated the student as a PERSON and not just how well you can take a test. And BTW, 93% of grad schools, law and medicine, etc accpet the system. One of my best friends got into Standford law with the Pass/No pass system COMBINED with the student evaluations. So, its a different thing, but it works. But you're right, now EVERY student has letter grades.

Yeah, the school isn't for everyone lol. We have NO on campus fraternities, look down on sport teams and its basically hippie paradise for many (I'm faaar from a hippie though ;)), but I LOVED it lol. Every moment of it and I feel I got a good education from it and proud to say I went there although I can understand why others wouldn't. Its a very different place versus something like UCLA, USC or even Cal State Long Beach, but why others picked it.

But then I hear that guy basically saying all the school does is produce left wing simpletons who are mass produced to lead the march for Castro is insulting! Yes, its a liberal school and so people with those beliefs will migrate there then people don't, but its insulting to say that the school is basically nothing more than a political tool for socialist recruits.

But I didn't want to JUST talk about this school obviously, but this overwelming belief that schools like UCSC has this liberal-radical dogma all over America and how true people feel that is?

While I feel many schools DO advance a liberal agenda, I don't feel its as advanced that there are never any other side heard, which is what the guy in the piece was saying about UCSC.

But yeah, the 'clothing optional' rules has been on the books since the '50's, BUT its not that much of a problem lol. I think its one of the rules that just been overlooked and since Veeeery few people take it up anyway, they don't feel need to dump I think. Also, Santa Cruz has an all nude beach as well, but its okay to wear clothes ;).

And for the record, I showed up dressed professional and sometimes even with a tie on and slacks when I attended a job festival there ;).

I attended UCSD in the 80's. I recall back then that fellow Triton's used to refer to UCSC as Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp.

And that's how WorldDisney got his reputation as the campus rebel.

Whew boy! LOL! I've had every imaginable type of student: naked, high, new age, the list goes on an on. Truly a test of my patience and acceptance.

Santa Cruz is a beautiful campus though! In my younger days I would have definitely fit in. ;>

Course this is all coming from somone who went to CalBerk. LOL!
