Star Tours: The Adventures Continue had its first soft opening yesterday at Disney's Hollywood Studios and the early reviews are in. What do Disney fans think of the updated version of the 1987 Disney classic?

Now if they would only keep the area around Star Tours like Star Wars week-ends all the time.

The digital HD 3D quality of the panoramas and stereo sound in the cabin were quite impressive and realistic. C3PO as a pilot is a nice touch. I did enjoy the subtle changes in lighting and show in the pre and post queue.

However..I know I am in the minority but the particular ride sequence I viewed, while not short on thrills, did not engage me too much. Maybe because I am not a Star Wars fan, but I just did not connect as much with it as I did with the original 1987 sequence.. which was more true to the original film (episode 4). Maybe some of the other possible ride scenarios may be more engaging for me.. but I am not running back there to ride again for a while.

One small petpeeve.. since Disney has made a big deal of the 3D technology.. how come they got rid of the 3D effects in the huge informational board on the queue? Also, the 3D glasses look cool but the lenses on them are very flimsy and have gotten scratched already. I went thru 5 different pairs of glasses before finding one that was not scratched to some degree. Finally.. for a 3D extravaganza as this.. could it have killed the budget if they had replaced the flat marquee poster on top of the main entrance for a more textured, stylish, fiber optic lit, tri-dimensional marquee??

I do like that the simulated motion seems more fluid and not as jerky, which my aging body does appreciate greatly.

All in all, TDLFAN rates it: A-
