Disney’s most successful shows are highlighted by subtle but effective show lighting. What they have been presenting now is like a beautiful woman with excessive make up. The excessive lighting just overpowers the natural beauty that was designed into the castle. I don’t know where Disney has been getting their designers (lighting or otherwise) lately, but there seems to be little of the subtle creativity that earlier generations were able to produce.

They have these curly-cue plastic "icicles" hanging down everywhere, that intertwine with the lights. During the day, they don't "read" from more than say 20 feet away, and at night, they have no significant diffusion/refraction quality to add any "shape" to the lights. Having done more effective "faux ice" lighting effects myself, and knowing it's NOT that hard to pull off, I'm kind of puzzled at why this particular approach was taken. Frankly, it looks kind of cheap.

By grouping them together, it gives a more realistic shape (wider at top and coming to a point instead of a single line) and also makes it easier to get what they are from a distance (since the gap is much more visible. There were infinate ways to do this though, and I guess they decided the curly things were the best idea. As for why they did that instead of anything else, I have no idea.

The icicles look really bad during daylight, and not that great at night either. The castle looks prettier when the icicle lights are off and just the garlands are lit, in my opinion. The snow looks ok from a distance but not so great up close. It doesnt fit well in many places, there are lots of pieces missing around the walls, I also noticed that many of the gold spires on the turrets are bent and damaged from the installation. It seemed like they could have been easily fixed but no one took the time to do so while they were up there. All in all it looked to me like an idea which probably looked great on paper, but not so great in execution, in my opinion.
